Basic Electrical – Two-Day Special Guest Session

We had a special two-day session on Basic Electrical with Mr. Prakash Shah Sir, the author of the Basic Electrical book. The session was very informative and focused on understanding the basic concepts of electricity, electrical safety, and practical wiring.

During the session, Prakash Shah Sir explained the important electrical quantities Voltage (V), Current (I), and Resistance (R). We learned the relationship between them using Ohm’s Law: V = I × R. Sir explained these concepts with practical examples, which helped us understand how voltage, current, and resistance work together in an electrical circuit.

A major part of the session was about electrical safety. Sir explained why safety is very important while working with electrical wires, switches, appliances, and electrical panels. We learned about different types of fuses and how to select the correct fuse according to the load and wiring. Proper fuse selection is important because it protects the wiring and electrical equipment from excessive current and short circuits.

Sir also explained the importance of using the correct wire size, MCB, fuse, earthing, and proper connections for safe electrical work. We learned that overloading a circuit can cause wires to heat up and may result in insulation damage or fire. Therefore, electrical components should always be selected according to the required load.

Another important topic was electric shock. Sir explained how a person can get an electric shock when the body becomes part of an electrical path, especially when there is contact with a live conductor and a path to earth or another potential. We learned that wet hands, damaged insulation, improper earthing, and faulty electrical equipment can increase the risk of shock.

We also learned several ways to prevent electric shock, such as switching off the power before working, using properly insulated tools, avoiding electrical work with wet hands, checking wires for damaged insulation, using proper earthing, and installing suitable protective devices such as MCBs and RCCBs where required. Sir emphasized that electrical safety rules should never be ignored.

The two-day session was a valuable learning experience because it combined theory with practical safety knowledge. We understood the basic relationship between voltage, current, and resistance and also learned how proper fuse selection, wiring practices, and safety precautions can help prevent electrical accidents.
