Solar Water Heater – Information
A Solar Water Heater is a system that uses sunlight to heat water. It helps reduce the use of electricity or other fuels for heating water.
1. Main Parts
- Solar Collector – Absorbs heat from sunlight.
- Storage Tank – Stores the hot water.
- Water Pipes – Carry water between the collector and tank.
- Insulation – Reduces heat loss from the tank and pipes.
- Support Stand – Holds the system securely.
- Inlet and Outlet Valves – Control the water flow.
2. How Does It Work?
Sunlight → Solar Collector → Water Gets Heated → Storage Tank → Hot Water Use
The solar collector absorbs heat from the sun. This heat is transferred to the water flowing through the collector. The heated water moves into the storage tank, while cooler water moves down toward the collector to be heated again.
3. Types of Solar Water Heater
A. Flat Plate Collector (FPC)
- Uses a flat solar collector.
- Contains an absorber plate and water pipes.
- Suitable for many residential applications.
B. Evacuated Tube Collector (ETC)
- Uses vacuum glass tubes.
- The vacuum helps reduce heat loss.
- Commonly used for domestic hot-water systems.
4. Advantages
- Uses free solar energy.
- Reduces electricity consumption.
- Environment-friendly.
- Useful for homes, hostels, hotels, hospitals, etc.
- Can provide hot water during sunny days.
5. Applications
- Home bathrooms
- Hotels
- Hospitals
- Hostels
- Industries
- Canteens
In short: A solar water heater converts solar energy into heat energy and uses that heat to provide hot waterSolar Water Heater – Detailed Working Process
A solar water heater uses the heat energy of sunlight to heat water. It mainly consists of a solar collector, storage tank, water pipes, insulation, and support structure.
Working Process
1. Sunlight falls on the collector
Solar radiation falls on the surface of the solar collector. The collector has an absorber surface that absorbs solar heat.
2. Heat is transferred to water
Water flows through pipes inside the collector. The absorbed solar heat is transferred from the absorber to the water, increasing its temperature.
3. Hot water moves upward
As the water becomes hot, its density decreases, so it naturally moves upward toward the storage tank. This is called the thermosiphon principle.
4. Cold water moves downward
The cooler and heavier water from the lower part of the storage tank moves down toward the solar collector.
5. Continuous circulation
This process continues as long as sufficient sunlight is available:
Cold Water → Solar Collector → Heated Water → Storage Tank
6. Hot water is stored
The storage tank is insulated to reduce heat loss. The heated water remains available for later use.
7. Hot water is supplied
When a tap or shower is opened, hot water flows from the storage tank to the point of use.Solar Water Heater – Detailed Working Process
