Introduction

Today, I performed a practical on a Solar Home Lighting System. The main objective of this practical was to understand how solar energy is converted into electrical energy and used for lighting in homes. I studied the components, working principle, and installation of a small solar lighting system.

1. Components of the Solar Home Lighting System

The system consists of the following components:

  1. Solar panel: A 6-watt solar panel is used to convert sunlight into electrical energy. The panel produces approximately 5.5 to 6 volts, depending on sunlight conditions.
  2. Battery: A rechargeable lithium-ion battery stores the electrical energy generated by the solar panel.
  3. Charge controller: It controls the charging of the battery and protects it from overcharging and excessive discharge.
  4. DC LED bulbs: Three DC LED bulbs are used for lighting. These bulbs consume less electricity and are suitable for a solar lighting system.
  5. Connecting wires: Wires are used to connect the solar panel, charge controller, battery, and LED bulbs.

2. Working Principle

The solar panel receives sunlight and converts it into DC electrical energy. This energy passes through the charge controller, which regulates the charging process and supplies power to the battery.

During the daytime, the battery stores energy generated by the solar panel. At night, when sunlight is unavailable, the stored energy is used to operate the DC LED bulbs.

The system provides lighting for approximately two to three hours, depending on the battery capacity, sunlight received during the day, and the power consumed by the bulbs.

3. Practical Procedure

First, I identified all the components of the solar home lighting system. Then, I observed the connections between the solar panel, charge controller, battery, and LED bulbs.

I studied how the charge controller manages battery charging and how the stored energy is supplied to the bulbs. I also learned that the solar panel should be installed in a position where it receives maximum sunlight.

4. Applications

Solar home lighting systems are useful in rural areas, homes, farms, and places where electricity supply is limited. They can also provide emergency lighting during power cuts.

Conclusion

Through this practical, I learned about the construction, components, and working principle of a solar home lighting system. I understood how solar energy can be stored in a battery and used at night. This practical helped me understand the importance of renewable energy and its applications in daily life.
