Off-Grid Solar System
I will explain in simple English how an off-grid solar system works, how to calculate the inverter capacity, how to select a battery, and how all the components work together.
1. What is an Off-Grid Solar System?
An off-grid solar system is a solar power system that works without depending on the electricity grid (MSEDCL).
It uses solar panels to generate electricity, batteries to store energy, and an inverter to supply electricity to household appliances.
Main components:
- Solar panels
- Solar charge controller (MPPT/PWM)
- Battery bank
- Inverter
- DC and AC protection devices
- Electrical loads such as fans, lights, TVs, and refrigerators
2. How Does an Off-Grid System Work?
Solar Panels
Convert sunlight into DC electricity
MPPT Charge Controller
Regulates solar power and charges the battery
Battery Bank
Stores electrical energy for later use
Inverter
Converts battery DC electricity into 230 V AC electricity
Home Appliances
Lights, fans, TV, refrigerator and other compatible loads
During sunny hours, solar power supplies the loads and charges the battery. At night or when sunlight is insufficient, the battery supplies the inverter. If the battery becomes low, the system may disconnect the loads or use a compatible backup generator or other charging source.
3. What Is an Inverter and How Does It Work?
An inverter is an electronic device that converts DC (Direct Current) electricity from a battery into AC (Alternating Current) electricity for household appliances.
- Input: DC electricity, for example 24 V or 48 V from a battery bank.
- Output: Usually 230 V AC in India.
- Main function: To run AC appliances using stored DC energy.
Types of inverters
1. Pure Sine Wave Inverter
Produces smooth AC electricity. It is suitable for fans, refrigerators, TVs, computers and many other appliances.
2. Modified Sine Wave Inverter
Usually cheaper, but some appliances may produce noise, run inefficiently or be incompatible.
3. Solar Inverter with MPPT
Manages solar-panel input and, in an off-grid model, can charge batteries and supply loads. Check the specifications because not every solar inverter is designed for off-grid operation.
