Soil Testing
Soil testing is the process of checking the quality and fertility of soil. It helps determine:
Soil fertility
Soil pH
Nutrient content
Nutrients Checked
N = Nitrogen
P = Phosphorus
K = Potassium
OC = Organic Carbon
EC = Electrical Conductivity
pH = Potential of Hydrogen
pH Scale
pH = 7: Neutral
pH < 7: Acidic pH > 7: Alkaline
Note: In your notebook, “Acidic” and “Alkaline” are reversed. The correct definitions are above.
Nitrogen Test Procedure
Take Test Bottle No. 1.
Add 6 ml of AN-1 solution to the bottle.
Add 1 g of soil using a funnel.
Shake or mix the contents well.
Leave the bottle undisturbed for 5 minutes.
Remove 2 ml of the clear solution into another test bottle.
Add 4 drops of AN-2 and mix well.
Add 4 drops of AN-3.
Compare the colour with the colour chart to determine the nitrogen level.
Nitrogen Level
Up to 280 kg/ha: Low
280–420 kg/ha: Medium
420–560 kg/ha: High
