Introduction

Today, I performed a practical activity on cleaning and maintaining a solar photovoltaic (PV) system installed in a polyhouse. Solar panels convert sunlight into electrical energy. Dust, soil particles, and other impurities can accumulate on the panel surface and reduce its efficiency. Regular cleaning and maintenance help improve the performance and lifespan of the solar system.

Objectives

  1. To understand the importance of solar panel cleaning.
  2. To observe the voltage and current before and after cleaning.
  3. To learn basic solar PV system maintenance practices.

Materials Required

  • Soft cleaning cloth or sponge
  • Clean water
  • Measuring instrument (multimeter or suitable meter)
  • Safety equipment, such as gloves

Procedure

Step 1: Initial inspection

First, I inspected the solar panels installed in the polyhouse and observed dust and dirt on their surfaces. Before cleaning, I recorded the electrical readings. The voltage was 217 V, and the current was 15.8 A.

Step 2: Cleaning the panels

I cleaned the panel surfaces carefully using clean water and a soft cloth. I removed the accumulated dust without scratching the glass. Proper care was taken to avoid damaging the panels or electrical connections.

Step 3: Checking the readings

After cleaning, I measured the voltage and current again under the available sunlight conditions. The voltage increased to 222 V, and the current increased to 16.5 A.

Observation Table

ParameterBefore cleaningAfter cleaning
Voltage217 V223 V
Current15.8 A16.5 A

The voltage increased by 5 V, while the current increased by 0.7 A. The measured electrical power, calculated using (P=V\times I), changed from approximately 3,428.6 W to 3,663 W. This is an increase of about 234.4 W, or 6.8%, based on the recorded readings.

Conclusion

This practical helped me understand the importance of cleaning and maintaining a polyhouse solar PV system. The recorded voltage and current increased after cleaning, indicating improved electrical output during the measurements. However, sunlight intensity, panel temperature, and measurement conditions can also affect the readings. Regular cleaning, inspection of cables and connections, and safe maintenance practices help keep a solar PV system operating efficiently.
