1. How to calculate electricity units
Electricity companies measure energy in units.
1 electricity unit = 1 kWh (kilowatt-hour).
Formula:
Units=1000Wattage×Hours used
Example: A 1000-watt heater runs for 2 hours.
10001000×2=2 units
Here are some common examples:
| Appliance | Power | Usage | Units |
|---|---|---|---|
| LED bulb | 10 W | 10 hours | 0.1 |
| Fan | 70 W | 10 hours | 0.7 |
| TV | 100 W | 5 hours | 0.5 |
| Iron | 1000 W | 1 hour | 1 |
| Heater | 2000 W | 2 hours | 4 |
2. How to calculate units from an electricity meter
For a digital electricity meter, look for the reading marked kWh.
Formula:
Units consumed=Current reading−Previous reading
Example:
- Previous reading: 12,450 units
- Current reading: 12,720 units
12720−12450=270 units
So, you consumed 270 units during that billing period.
If you mean a micrometer or a special type of electricity meter, tell me which meter you are studying so I can explain how to read it.
3. MahaVitaran electricity bill calculation
MahaVitaran, also known as MSEDCL, supplies electricity across much of Maharashtra.
Your bill can include several components:
- Energy charges — based on units consumed and the applicable tariff slabs.
- Fixed charges — depending on your connection and tariff.
- Wheeling charges and other applicable charges.
- Electricity duty and other applicable taxes or adjustments.
Important: The amount per unit is not necessarily the same for every unit. It depends on your consumer category, consumption slabs and the tariff in force. For official rates and rules, see the MSEDCL website .
